//Lowland
Stretching North from Hadrian’s wall through the hills of the Border Counties and descending to the Firth’s of Clyde and Forth in Central Scotland, this region of undulating landscapes benefits from a gentle climate. Characterised by rich agricultural land suited to the cultivation of cereals, in particular wheat and barley, and served by two rivers, the Lowlands were predisposed for distillation. Distilled up to three times Lowlands whiskies are generally dry and light, marked by a subtle hint of flowers and heather. At the end of the 19th century more than twenty distilleries were active in the Lowlands. Only two now remain, Auchentoshan in North Glasgow and Glenkinchie in East Edinburgh.
